Amazon Modifies Seller Feedback Experience

SEATTLE – Amazon’s Seller Feedback experience changed on Aug. 4 with an official statement on Amazon’s Seller Central (Discussions Forum) outlining the details. Seller feedback addresses how buyers rate sellers, particularly order fulfillment, communication, and customer service.

“Customers can now provide star-only ratings without written feedback—in addition to the option to provide written feedback if they choose,” wrote Amazon officials. “Our preliminary tests show that this simpler process helps sellers collect more ratings faster. We also found in our tests that many of these star-only ratings come from customers who have had positive order experiences but previously did not provide written feedback, which in turn may lead to an increase in the average seller ratings for many selling partners.”

“It’s supposed to make it quicker and easier for buyers,” confirms Chris McCabe, founder of ecommerceChris, Cambridge, Mass. “I think Amazon is also not interested in getting all these review removal requests. Maybe they think it will be less of an administrative headache for them if buyers aren’t writing as many reviews. Sometimes buyers leave reviews and they make mistakes—and then sellers complain and want those reviews removed.”

“It’s not a big deal for sellers who ship via FBA, but huge for sellers who fulfill orders themselves,” says Liz Downing (pictured left), brand director, Prosper Show. “Buyers leaving seller feedback used to have to write something about their reason for their star rating. When people just leave a star rating, not only is there no context for their rating, but those ratings will not be eligible for appeal.”
